Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is mostly found in the southern hemisphere is in Antarctica. However, there are also species of penguin that live in the northern part of the earth, in the Galapagos Islands. Generally, the height of a penguin can be about 1 meter, but there are also species of penguin whose height is only 40cm. Penguins usually live in large colonies that can consist of 50,000. Penguins spend 75% of their time in the water to hunt for food. Penguins living in Antarctica prefer to prey on shrimp and squid, while penguins that live in warm regions tend to eat fish. Penguin is one of the bird species, although having wings, but they can not fly.
Penguin looks no fear of humans and even they are often seen approaching a group of explorers without hesitation. This is because there are no predators in Antarctica or coastal area of the islands that prey on or attack penguins. Even so, the penguins will get the threat at sea of their natural predators such as seals and sharks. Although they are not afraid of human, penguin will not approach closer to human than 3 meters because they tend to be nervous and then retreated.
Here are some types of penguin around the world.
1. The African Penguin (Spheniscus Demersus)
African Penguin is a penguin that is small to medium sized and is found along the coast of South Africa and in several surrounding islands. African penguin species are thought to be closely related to Humboldt and Magellanic penguins that were found in the south of South America, and the penguin Galapogos that was found in the Pacific Ocean near the equator. African Penguin was named so because it was found only in Africa, and it is believed as the first penguin species were discovered by Human.
2. The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri)
The Emperor Penguin is found in and around the Antarctic continent. Emperor Penguin is one of penguin species in the world and is also one of the most unique. Instead of breeding in the warmer summer like other penguin species, the Emperor Penguins incubate their eggs and hatch them during the winter in the coldest place on Earth. The emperor penguin is a bird that can not fly with wings which are small and stiff that help it to swim in the water.
Although first recorded by Captain Cook on the second voyage at the end of the 1700s, the emperor penguin colony was first discovered in 1902 in the very south. The new emperor penguin colonies still continue to be recorded until the end of 1986. Due to the fact that emperor penguins breed and live in the land of ice, they are considered to be the only bird species that spend their entire lives without actually walking on the ground.
3. The Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus Magellanicus)
Magellanic penguins are penguin which have size range from small to medium and are found inhabiting rocky islands off the coast of South America. Magellan penguins are closely related to African penguins, Galapagos penguins and Humboldt penguins that are similar in appearance. Although classified as a threatened species, Magellanic penguins are one type of penguins. Magellanic penguin breed is found off the coast of southern Argentina and Chile and the Falkland islands further south. Like other species, Magellanic penguins spend most of their time hunting for food in the sea around and come to the ground for nesting in large colonies on the coast.
4. Small Penguin / Fairy Penguin (Eudyptula Minor)
The little penguin is the smallest penguin species in the world with an average penguin adults only reach half a meter in height. Small penguin has a number of other common names including fairy penguins, little blue penguins or blue penguins. Small penguin is one of several species of penguins that is found in the northern part of the Antarctic Ocean. The fraction is found to inhabit the rocky coastline of New Zealand, Tasmania and southern Australia.
5. King Penguin / Royal Penguin (Eudyptes Schlegeli)
King Penguin is a large-sized penguin species found inhabiting the frozen waters surrounding the Antarctic continent. King penguin is famous for its yellow fur that grows from the forehead to the back of the head. Like the other penguin species, king penguins also spend most of their lives at sea hunting and are usually found in nutrient-rich waters surrounding Antarctica. However, the only known king penguins breed on Macquarie Island, a rocky Pacific island in the southwestern part which is located roughly halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica.
